1. What are free radicals?
Free radicals are highly reactive molecules; they attack the protein and the DNA of the body, causing degeneration in several different levels, such as hair whitening. Despite their proven adverse effect, free radicals play also an important role in the body's health, combating inflammation, killing bacteria and controlling the tone of "smooth muscles".
The human body, in healthy condition, has protective enzymes that repair 99% of the damage caused by oxidation. However, it is often necessary to resort to an external antioxidants because the metabolic processes are not the only source of free radicals.
Antioxidants protect the body from the harmful action of free radicals. Some antioxidants are produced by our own body and others - such as vitamins C, E and beta-carotene (scavengers) - are provided externally by some products and food.
